The Solent refers to the waters that separate the Isle of Wight from the mainland of England and is a major shipping route for many shipping companies which include passengers, freight and military vessels.
With its beautiful seas and tranquil surroundings, it serves also as an important recreational area for water sports, particularly yachting. It has been hosting the Cowes Week sailing event annually.
Sheltered by the Isle of Wight, it has allowed Southampton to remain a very successful port. Portsmouth lies on its shores and Spithead, an area off Gilkicker Point near Gosport, is known as the place where the Royal Navy is traditionally reviewed by the monarch even till today.
This area holds great ecological and landscape importance, simply because of the coastal and estuarine habitats along the edge of the Solent. Most of this area has been designated as a Special Area of Conservation. Surrounding it are important nature reserves which include the New Forest National Park, and the Isle of Wight AONB.
